Bio
I am an old goth who finally got to attend Convergence 13 in Portland and I think it has totally revamped my life. The images and experiences I found myself immersed in there have made profound changes in the way I view art, dream, even see the simplest of things. To be surrounded by like minded persons for the most part happy and friendly (minus the one who took my wallet) and to see the creativity was wonderful and freeing. My dreams were always of the most apocalyptic and surreal nature but now seem even more colorful and developed. From my experiences there and my dreams I have been painting ever since, something I have not done in years and never before had I been inspired to paint people. Maybe I hadn't been around people worth painting~! I feel profoundly isolated and sad at times since then realizing how different my reality is from the one I would choose-to live convergence. But then perhaps it would be cheapened by familiarity. I hope to share the images I have been painting and that those whose photographic images I may borrow from will not be offended. I am drawing from the memory of what my senses told me at the time, my own photos and those of others... none of which would be sufficient on their own.
During the event I often recalled the people not there, those who didn't survive their own darkness or who are still so mired in it they are barely functional, and I mourn them. But I recognize the survivors who did make it there, many of us have been through hell. There are probably a lot of amazing stories that defy commonly held views on depression, addiction, mourning, abuse... the sides of us that bind and yet ironically mold us into something more beautiful than we perhaps would have achieved if we were not so darkly shaped. I hope everyone who comes out of this and out of our coming together feels uplifted as I do. It was truly an amazing experience and I thank every one of you for it. Except the wallet thief.
